You should read horizontally in both cases. One is "sarugaku". The kanji which indicates "monkey" is followed by "gaku". "Sarugaku" is Japanese traditional performance art. Another is "jinkou-kanmiryou". "Jinkou" is "artifical" and "kanmiryou" is "sweetener", i.e. it indicates "an artifical sweetener".
I'm sorry for lack of explanation! You can also read vertically in both cases. One is "rakubi". "rakubi" is the last day of a tournament of Sumo-wrestling. Another is "suama". It is a kind of Japanese mochi cake.
