For anybody that's been wondering about this game, it isn't dead. I apologize for the hiatus but I've needed to figure out some important things so I'm back, but the next update I post will most likely be the last one I make here. Just a reminder though, I'm still working on it

No problem! I love the graphics you made here, clepto! I saw this, got inspired, and started a new platformer that mostly uses custom sprites. My sprites.... are okaaaaay......... but yours look like you put a lot of thought and effort into them!

I have each room saved as a bgscreen called something like rm0304. When I reach the end of the room I make the player start at the opposite side of the next room, then increase/decrease a variable for my map X/Y position. I then use STR$ to turn those variables into a string then add de other stuff to what we'll call L$. For example L$="dat:rm0304_l0". Then finally I just put load L$.

I think the sprites look pretty good! They look like a cross between Cave Story and River City Ransom. Also, they look like pirates. Please let this game be about pirates!

Actually, You got it on your first try! this game is about the Boerd Squad trying to save the island of elohelwut (lolwut) from being destroyed by pirates, who want the island to set up an illegal business for pirating pirated movies and video games. The question is: what do the pirates REALLY want the island for? not gonna spoil!

How's this for dirt and sand? I've never drawn dirt or sand before, so I took inspiration from Woodman's stage and Kirby's Adventure. I think it turned out ok, but it might be too simplistic. As for the grass, I thought it would be better to have long thin strands so they can be recolored for dying grass in a desert stage, not sure if thesand was for a beach or a desert.

I will post a pic of the updated Sprite, but the brown was a sort of ground placeholder. I was trying to get the important stuff (mechanics, story, etc) out of the way and then to fix the placeholder. I failed though, but I did make some pretty sweet sprites! A quick and easy demo may come out soon; it just depends on how much time I have to work.

Also, name changes, character changes, and more coming to demo v0.0.0 BGE (before game era). I have a menu set up that was heavily inspired from smash bros 64 (idea from petit bros), but I still want to try multiplayer functionality. My original concept was that in single player, you could freely switch between four different characters with different abilities (ugh! Sonic boom!)

But that was too hard to think of, so I thought of an old idea, which was having one character be all out attack and the other all out defense. One character has a knife or sword, and one has a shield. titles I'm thinking of (because boerd squad sounds odd): The Legendary Zedd (a name born from me mispellng Zelda) Pandora, or Bob and Jeff.

Because of some problems I'm running into with jumping, I am thinking of making it have Mario platform elements and Zelda (the first one) no jumping. That probably won't last long. Every time i program walking through the d pad, I can never jump! It makes me stop moving altogether! Another hurdle: maps and collisions. My question: WHY BASIC? I mean, the ONLY person I found that gives tutorials on smileBASIC is the petit professor! Well sorry to disappoint, but I know what I know from pulling my hair out trying to learn from the example programs in Petit Computer and a manual like website that's not up anymore. Once I had a decent grasp on SmileBasic it was practice practice practice for about 4 years

Thanks! Do you think I should store my levels as DATA? i wanted to store it in an array that looked like dim first[5,5] data 1,1,1,1,1 data 1,0,0,0,1 data 1,0,0,0,1 etc. 1 represents a certain sprite, and i feel like this would help with collision, because every single 1 would be a certain sprite. However, i have no idea how to do this and im stuck using bgfill. this stinks because now, i am

limited to having no floating platforms. How were your maps used? Did you even use maps? How did you set up levels and collisions? Sorry for the barrage of questions; once i get the hang of this, i'll be 'somewhat' 'good' with this

I never bothered with Data and personally I try to avoid arrays. For setting objects for a certain room, I have a subroutine set for loading each room, and in that subroutine are a bunch of SPVAR functions containing each objects behavior and X/Y coordinates

The subroutine actually uses a string as a label. For example, a base string is made by turning the X/Y coordinates into a string and added to "RM". So let's say we have B$="RM0304", then we'd make R$="@"+B$ and we'll want to make a string for each bg layer as well so it would look like L1$="DAT:SC_"+B$+"_L1"

Also, since you have to use an array for storing background data you'd need to setup one for each bg layer. With everything together, it would look like this, XSCREEN 2 DIM BGL0[0] LOAD L$ '(DAT:SC_RM0304_L0) GOSUB R$ '(@RM0304)
