Since smoothing disturbaces in the gluon field takes energy, it costs energy to pull apart the quarks. Eventually, this flux tube becomes so long that another pair of quarks pop into existence between the original quarks. This is turning energy into matter. This could be solar powered, and with the proper nano tecnhnology, you could construct air out of these quarks.
