Mastering bomb cooking will make you feel like a pro! I would say that's the most critical upgrade to buy early on.

Best for me is level 3. Would be cool if you could find a sword in the maze somewhere and use that to fight.

Or better yet, pick up a sword from one of the dead skeletons.
