He would have to publish it to the server as another game with different sprites though. On top of we wouldn't be able to share the final Doom product.

You can't publish copyrighted work, but someone has posted to Miiverse images of a Wolfenstein game in the works. Doom sprites are easy to find, if we can get the finished engine we could just make our own Doom.
