Because people who don't understand that the software distinguishes three button state events (as Pannenkoek was using and as shown in the screenshot) experienced dissonance when the seemingly obvious reality of binary *hardware* button states was expressed and Pannenkoek actually explained the assumption behind the belief in and use of partial states.
