if your going with a story book theme maybe make the player characters actions in whatever story they're in change the story and how the npc interact with you and they're changed environment? ps- sorry i'm of no help ^^;

Oh my gosh!! How in the world did you guess the whole concept of this game!!!!!!!!! Im so shocked because not alot of people can do that (at least with my stuff)
