In Javascript, there's a command called ".length" which told you how many characters were in a string. Does anyone know of an equivalent of that for smileBasic?

And removed the brackets.

I got it to work by doing this. For some reason, it wouldn't work until I separated the lines after the "then" on line 38.

That wasn't the problem (well, it was part of the problem), but I got it to work.
