Up to PS3 and 4?!? Nah, I'd say about SNES graphics. The syntax is somewhat different to that of the original BASIC language, but give it a go. It's super easy to program video games. Plus, it's portable!

Your uncle may not know THIS version of BASIC. Just as C and C++ are slightly different, and use keywords that are exclusive in those languages, then the same goes with BASIC and SmileBASIC.

Heck, when I started programming I never knew how fun it was; the fact that it can be used as a fun alternative to math really surprised me. A lot of math concepts can be found in programming, such as variables, functions, and loops (for loops are really similar to sigma notation). Programming could be understood as a new language. Just understand it as much as you can.

I want to learn how to raycast in Java and C++ (with OpenGL and SDL, of course), and hopefully SmileBASIC could give me a jump start. Anything I need to know before starting?

A game where you manipulate a vector and try to maneuver yourself through a series of quadrants to locate the x-intercept of the diameter of a rhombicosidodecahedron. Or you could make a generic cactus simulator.

SmileBASIC I have no knowledge, unfortunately. But what I could do is grab a game, see the source code, and find out how to translate that code to another programming language.
