@Alex Is that confirmed? I haven't really heard much about a release anywhere. Could you point me towards a source of this info? Search engines aren't helping... @Warrior That'd disappoint me, if true. I want SmileBASIC programs on the big screen... @Aaron I'd love to think more people will pick up the Wii U! A price drop would certainly encourage buyers.

This announcement certainly brings an interesting future for this series, and I'd like for this community to discuss ideas or opinions about the topic. (Also, a bit out of topic, I'd like to apologize for my absence as of late. I've seen a bunch of questions people have had that I have not been able to answer due to time constraints. Life has been keeping me quite busy...)

That itself could mean that we could be getting a successor to SmileBASIC on the Switch. This would end up being the 4th entry in the Petit Computer series, SmileBASIC for 3DS being the 3rd, if I recall correctly. It's interesting to imagine how a hypothetical SmileBASIC for Switch would utilize its unique features, like the detachable controllers (Joy-Cons).

They could also scrap the Wii U version and begin work on a Switch version. This would require the most work, I would imagine, since SmileBASIC programs are meant to be run on a platform with certain features, like two simultaneous screens, which may or may not be present on the Switch. This means straight ports of these programs may be difficult to work out or may not be present at all.

They could release it on the Wii U, where it would become a cult-like piece of software, where it could find its share of dedicated users, but would ultimately become obscured by software on the new platform.

This puts the release of SmileBASIC for Wii U in an awkward spot, since it probably won't release before the Switch's launch, and releasing it for the Wii U would be disadvantageous due to the many users that will be leaving for the newer platform. In my opinion, this leaves a couple of options for future releases of SmileBASIC...

More specifically, SmileBoom had announced SmileBASIC for Wii U quite a while ago. What's worrying is that we still haven't gotten a time frame for its release. While Nintendo has stated that their new console is not meant as a replacement for either the Wii U or 3DS, we can expect a decline of users for them, and in my opinion, specially for the Wii U.

SmileBASIC and Nintendo Switch

Most of you are probably already aware that Nintendo has announced their new console, the Nintendo Switch, is set for release on March 2017. Many of you are going to have opinions on the console, but what I wanted to bring attention to with this discussion is what this means to SmileBASIC.

Well, I'm not one to promote myself, but I did make a font with serifs a while back. Perhaps you'll like it, or perhaps not! Key: <REN45KHV>

I'm glad it worked out for you! I actually went ahead and tested it myself, except I used a sprite the size of a single pixel.

As Jacob said, I'd suggest researching topics that are completely unknown to you and putting them to the test in smaller programs. If you have an idea on how to implement them, experimenting with code is a good programming learning practice. You can also ask here! Questions are not annoying, especially if people are willing to learn from them.

It's a bit complicated. The engine is contained within the P3D_ENGINE program, so you should load that. Unlike the raycasting engine, it doesn't contain a guide on how to use it, although it still contains comments with basic documentation of the functions. You could read those and form an idea on how to use it. Sadly, I can't really help you with it, because I haven't used it myself...

I'm sorry, but if you mean N64 graphics as in 3D graphics on the level of N64, those are pretty much impossible to do on SmileBASIC (for 3DS). Even 3D on the level of SNES is tough to get right. However, there are some engines that facilitate creating 3D worlds and models, such as the raycasting engine and P3D. I'd suggest either looking those up or reconsidering the graphics style...

Sorry, but that's not possible with GFILL. All colors in the graphics screen are solid. If you still want a transparent box, you could probably make a 1px sprite, color it with transparency, and then scale it to cover the area you want. I haven't tried that myself, but it might work.

There is no problem in promoting the original program by sharing the original key. However, I don't really see you doing that here, so it is understandable to assume something else... It doesn't matter if you upload the sprites separately. They still contain copyrighted content. You should not upload any kind of copyrighted content whatsoever. Please help SmileBoom out by following their rules.

I'd tell you about the copyrighted assets, but other people seem to have it covered. Did you consult with the creator before trying to re-release it? It's pretty rude to upload someone else's program without their permission... Also, there is no point in releasing this with the official Super Mario Maker coming to 3DS soon.

Pretty neat! Didn't expect something non-joke from you, heh. I'd suggest a feature where you can listen each kana with TALK. Maybe it won't sound so clear, but it might help. I'd be motivated to do something similar to this with Chinese, but I've not learnt it fully yet and explaining/displaying each character would be a pain!

However, most people will want to get this software to download other people's programs. Trust me when I say that there is some amazing games out there, and you can download as many as you want! There's games, painting programs, utilities and more! You can also publish your own programs and share them here. Just be wary that copyrighted content is NOT allowed to be published.

As you said, this is programming software. You can write programs in a language called SmileBASIC. These programs can do pretty much ANYTHING. It isn't easy to make amazing programs, but the experience you get is very much worth it. Programming is a skill that's very desirable these days.

Huh! I've got no clue! A game with movement similar to a knight's tour, maybe? I can't really see a concrete pattern, though... Do tell about it!
